The Deep

Last week, Y5 were lucky enough to travel all the way to Hull for a trip to The Deep aquarium.

We spent the day observing all kinds of sealife, including baby zebra sharks, swordfish, turtles, penguins, jellyfish and more! It was a great opportunity to learn interesting facts about the ocean and it’s inhabitants.

Did you know…clown fish biologically change gender part way through their lives, if the female in the group dies?

Not only did we look at fish, we also had the chance to take part in a “Think like a Scientist” workshop, where we handled real life shark teeth, playing detective to match the shark it must come from. We handled endangered coral and even used microscopes to monitor baby shrimp! Y5 Leeds, upon closer inspection, even detected a pregnant shrimp.

I think our favourite part was walking through the incredible underwater tunnel, where lots of different species swam around and above our heads. The string ray certainly couldn’t seem to get enough of us!

Overall, the children described it as “the best trip ever”, and we learned a lot.
