Welcome to Year 5
Miss Tourzani and Mr Bailey are glad to be back teaching in the classroom and are excited by all the thrilling things they have planned for the Autumn 1 half-term!
Our text driver this half term is ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ by Onjali Q Rauf.
Our wider curriculum work will be based on Yorkshire and the community and will include geography, art and design and technology. Children will be learning about the physical and human geography of Yorkshire and will be creating a leaflet to persuade tourists to come and visit South Yorkshire.
Our science topic is ‘reproduction in plants and animals’ and ‘the circle of life’ where we will explore the parts of plants, understanding the different types of animals and their life cycles and learning how to classify living things.
In maths, we will learn about the number system using numbers up to a million. We will learn how to compare and order numbers to a million and to round them to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000. We will also look at Roman numerals and negative numbers before moving onto addition and subtraction of 5 digit numbers.
In English, we will be studying several books this half term, starting with ‘The Man Who Walked Between the Towers’ by Mordicai Gerstein. In 1974, French aerialist Philippe Petit threw a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Centre and spent an hour walking, dancing and performing high-wire tricks a quarter of a mile in the sky.
We will be writing a wide range of text types including information texts, persuasive letters, interviews and biographies.
